“In Karnak, Titus 12’s first release on Uncomfortable Beats, the beatsmith from Bristol/Melbourne juices a heady blend of easy, back street basslines, twisting the murk of dubstep, with the rattle and fire of reggae. Accidental samples, melodica lines, and renegade 808 patterns dance around the rhythm section.
Fuelling a self -confessed addiction for ‘weird beats’, the EP takes its name from the jungle wilderness where Titus 12 spent three months in near-isolation, breaking beats to shape his signature sound. His love of dubwise beats and found-sound samples inject his tracks with a walk ‘n’ skank swagger that’s just as at home on your headphones as it is blazing out the speaker stacks. Subsonic steppa Junktion rolls out the EP with a languid drawl of stolen samples, drum stutters and pitched vocals.
The tangled, LA beats inspired reggae of Drymouth Disco, leads on to speedy drums and cascading thumb piano in the bold soundscapes of Cliento. But the definitive sound comes as we’re taken deeper into the dubfire to brock wild in ‘Burning Low’; or ambling through the reggae riddims of ‘Title Fight’, a lazy, lilty festival steppa made for blazin’ on a sunny afternoon. The EP Closes on ’12th century fool’, where medieval music from vinyl meets surging drums and a trapped-skank conclusion.
Including a cheeky jungle-meets-footwork remix of Junktion by Able 8, and a stepped up footwork rerub of Cliento by Dutch Producer Frenquency, Karnak is ready for your listening pleasure on Uncomfortable Beats.”
